Main task - Getting started.
The other day I gave a presentation on my initial ideas for my main task - music video. Audience feedback was very positive, they all really liked the idea and originalty of it and had high expectations of what it will turn out like. Here is what
I presented:
Song for my music video:
Initial ideas:
For my main task I really wanted to do a backwards music video. When something is filmed and played back backwards, everyday actions come out very peculiar and abstract. I wanted to do a backwards music video because of this and its originality. Also as backwards music videos start at the end of a story line it raises a lot of questions for the audience which will be answered at the end, which is what will probably draw most people in. A lot of backward music videos also generally seem to be songs that stay out of the charts, and songs that are quite unique and original. That is how I came around to choosing Bombay Bicycle clubs song 'Carry me' for my music video. Here are some backwards music videos that have these aspects:
Messe Kopp - Forward
Summer camp - Fresh
Rhett & Link - 2 guys 600 pillows
Group love - Tongue tied
Blanket barricade - A velvet affair
Jack Johnson - sitting, waiting, wishing
Coldplay - The scientist
Alt J - Breezeblocks
Storyline/ Narrative
- Song has lots of repetition, of rhythms beats and lyrics (eg Carry me, is repeated several times) So will be a lot of repetition in my video.
- Want it to be a music video with a message based around a sensitive topic as these music videos seem to be the ones that stick out and make people carry on thinking about it after - eg Lady Gaga till it happens to you, Alt J Breeze blocks, Hozer Take me to church.
- All powerful music videos have a topic - Rape, abuse, homophobia, racism etc.
- My topic: Alcohol, and how alcohol can affect a person and the people around them lives, and what the abuse of it can result in.
Mise en scene
- In story - Low key, signify sadness and mood in story
- When band plays - low key
- Band - drama studio? - plain back ground
- Story - Variety of different locations; graveyard, pubs, alleyways, parks etc - places that represent loneliness and seclusion. I went for walks and took pictures of possible locations for my video:
Costume:
- Typical teenage clothing eg. Hoodies

As protagonists becomes more familiar with alcohol and abuses it more, their outfit will start to change:
- start out with white clothing to signify her innocence and purity
- ends up wearing black to signify her gradually becoming more corrupt. Her innocence has become intoxicated.
Facial expressions:
- sad/ devastation
- emotionless
Props:
- Beginning less bottles lots of people
- End less people more bottles
- Good use of props to be filmed backwards; Smashing bottles, paint, popping balloons, jumping, feathers, petals, running, crying etc.
Narrative theorists applied
Andrew Goodwin aspects of music videos will be applied to my music video.- Thought beats - Music is very fast and jumpy so may be difficult to keep in time with but if it works out it could come out looking really cool
- Narrative & performance
- Relation of visuals to the song - illustrative
- Technical aspects
